These educational tools featured raised relief to represent landmasses and topographical features, with labels in Braille, facilitating an interactive learning experience. The South African National Council for the Blind marketed these globes in South Africa, enhancing accessibility for visually impaired individuals in the region.
One such tactile globe was generously donated by Mario and Amanda Nijenhuis, exemplifying the collaborative efforts to improve educational resources for the visually impaired community.

Prior to this, Kevin Murphy developed TACK-TILES® in the early 1980s. Inspired by his blind son's needs, Murphy transformed LEGO-like blocks into tactile braille cells to teach braille to children with visual impairments and additional disabilities.
Both LEGO Braille Bricks and TACK-TILES® exemplify the potential of tactile learning tools in making braille education engaging and accessible for children with visual impairments.

In 1916, a blind philosophy doctoral candidate, Carl Strehl, founded the “Deutsche Blindenstudienanstalt“ (German Society of Blind Academicians) to give young war-blinded soldiers the chance to graduate and study at university.
Blista designed and manufactured the “Blista Braille Schreib-maschine” for use by its blind students and it was widely in use as the best mechanical brailler in the world, until the arrival of the Perkins in 1951.
Since 1994, the non-profit “Blista Brailletec GmbH” is owned by the “Deutsche Blindenstudienanstalt” together with three German organizations for the blind. (From the Braille Services collection)

Featuring six keys corresponding to the braille cell dots, along with space, backspace, and line feed keys, it allows for efficient and accurate braille embossing. Its robust metal construction and user-friendly design have made it a reliable tool worldwide. Modern versions, like the SMART Brailler, incorporate digital features such as text-to-speech and visual displays to enhance learning and accessibility.
htmlText_214A9349_156F_9E1B_41A5_0043A4D2D00E.html = The slate and stylus are portable tools that allow individuals who are blind to write braille manually. The slate consists of two hinged plates: the back plate has indentations forming braille cells, and the front plate has corresponding openings to guide the stylus. To write, a sheet of paper is placed between the plates, and the stylus is used to emboss dots by pressing through the openings. Writing is done from right to left, creating braille characters in reverse; the paper is then flipped to read the raised dots from left to right.

Each square has a central hole to secure the pegged pieces, preventing accidental displacement during play. The set includes tactile wooden discs: one set with flat tops and the other with raised-circle tops, allowing players to distinguish between different pieces by touch. Crafted from durable materials, the 13-inch square wooden board ensures longevity, and the compact design makes it portable for both home and travel use. Additionally, the set comes with a plastic storage case for organizing the 30 checker pieces, enhancing convenience and accessibility

“Louis Braille (1809-1852) het, met die ontdekking van sy puntskrif moedertaalonderrig aan blindes van alle tale dwarsoor die wêreld moontlik gemaak. Braille, die enigste lees- en skryfmedium vir blindes, ontsluit die skatkamers van kennis en kultuur.”
htmlText_23779BFD_157B_8DFB_416E_F88E28127047.html = Historically, South Africa's English braille followed the British system, and Afrikaans braille was based on Dutch. In 1938, Dr. Victor Vaughan developed the first Afrikaans braille system, revised in 1964 by Miss Connie Aucamp and Mr. Johan ("Oubaas") van Eeden. In 2008, the Unified Braille Code (UBC) was adopted for all South African languages, each with its own contractions. The displayed manuals were donated by Pioneer Printers, Institute for the Blind, Worcester.
htmlText_0A870575_15ED_9A0B_41B3_1401E2D16B24.html = Louis Braille (1809–1852) was a French educator who, at age 15, developed the Braille system—a tactile code enabling blind individuals to read and write. Blinded by an accident at three, he later studied at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris. Inspired by Charles Barbier's "night writing," Braille's six-dot system represented letters and symbols through touch. Initially met with resistance, it eventually gained acceptance and was expanded to include musical and mathematical notations, significantly enhancing educational opportunities for the visually impaired. Braille dedicated his life to teaching at the Institute and passed away from tuberculosis at 43. Today, his system remains a fundamental tool for blind individuals worldwide.

These adaptations enhance accessibility and promote cognitive skills such as spatial awareness and strategic thinking.
htmlText_0E3E6153_152A_BA0F_4152_E585AC7857BA.html = The Moon System of Embossed Reading, developed in 1845 by Dr. William Moon, is a tactile writing system for the blind that utilizes raised symbols resembling simplified Latin letters. This design makes it particularly accessible for individuals who lose their sight later in life, as the characters are easier to learn than Braille. Moon's system gained international recognition, with publications in over 400 languages, and remains a valuable alternative for those with reduced tactile sensitivity.

Boards have raised black squares and holes to secure pegged pieces; black pieces feature identifying pins. Players announce moves aloud for clarity.
Reginald Bonham significantly advanced blind chess by founding the International Braille Chess Association (IBCA) in 1951 and organizing the first correspondence tournament for blind players. He achieved multiple championships, including the inaugural English Blind Chess Championship in 1956 and the first World Blind Chess Championship in 1958.
htmlText_031544BB_152A_FA7F_41B3_BEC56BB0EF61.html = Introduced in late 1903 by Henry Stainsby and Albert Wayne, the Stainsby-Wayne Braillewriter underwent several modifications over three decades. The 1910 model featured a bell on the far left with a long wire striker, teeth only on the rear rail, an oval space key set at a right angle to the rails, and a uniquely shaped paper clamp with a swivel locking bar.
